What is digital signage?
Overview
Let’s start from the beginning. Digital signage is the modern alternative to printed signs. It allows you to send campaigns, menus, sales, announcements and more, live all from one dashboard. Instead of printing posters, you can update content in minutes across one screen or thousands.
What does digital signage need?
At its core, digital signage requires a few key things:
- DisplayÂ
- Hardware
- Media Player
- Digital Signage Software
- Network & Installation
- Content

- Display
The display is what your content is shown on.Â
This is usually a screen, TV or commercial panel.Â
It can also be an LED wall or projector. Even transparent, outdoor or touch screens.Â
We recommend a digital signage screen, not a Smart TV. It’s the equivalent of hiring an experienced hoola hooper, instead of a general circus clown. It’s really good at what you want it to do. Read more here: Smart TVs vs. Commercial Grade Screens.
When choosing your screen, consider:
- Screen size (relative to where it will be used)
- Resolution (HD is often best for under 55 inch, 4K is best for over)
- Brightness (especially for outdoor use)
- Orientation (landscape or portrait)
- Operating hours (16/7 or 24/7, screens are engineered specifically for each)
- Media player (built in System on Chip (SoC) or is a separate media player needed to be purchased)
- Warranty (your screen uptime and location impact your cover requirements)

- Media Player
A media player connects to your screen to display your content.Â
It is required to run your digital signage software / content management system (including Fusion Signage).Â
Many screens come with internal media players (often called System on Chip or SoC for short).
If your screen doesn’t have an internal media player, you need an external media player (this is a separate device that plugs into your screen).Â
The most common media players come from:
- Android
- ChromeOS
- Brightsign
- Tizen (Samsung)
- WebOS (LG)
- Windows
- Linux
Pair Fusion Signage with your media player to ready it for content. If you need help with a media player, your Integrator is a perfect contact. If you don’t have an Integrator, reach out and we will put you in touch.Â

- Digital Signage Software
Digital signage software allows you to remotely publish content to your media player.
Digital signage software is also known as a Content Management System (CMS).
Your in-built or media player paired with your screen and digital signage software is what sends signage live.
Since Fusion Signage is cloud-based, you can access all your screens from anywhere.
Just log into your account on a web browser and there they are. How nice.Â

Connectivity Options
This is how your displays, media player/s and the software connect.Â
It is basically talking to your internet connection.Â
A stable choice saves so many headaches.Â
Choose from:
- Wi-Fi
- Wired Ethernet
- 4G/5G cellular
- VPN connections
Installation
How your screen is fixed to your location speaks to it being installed.
Most indoor digital screens are mounted like any other TV.Â
Depending on what the wall is made from, you might need pole mounts. Or specific access approvals.
Outdoor screens might require council approval or engineering certificates pre-installation.
It’s a very clever idea to speak with a digital signage Integrator about this.Â

- Content
Content is what shows on your screen/s.
It has a big job: turn heads, catch attention, seize opportunities.
Content creation tools like Canva help you create content very quickly.Â
You can use Canva to create designs directly inside Fusion Signage.Â
Fusion Signage also has a built-in Designer with hundreds of templates ready to go.
You can drag-and-drop within these design tools to make digital signage content distinctly yours. Brand fonts, colours, photos, illustrations, logos. It’s possible to feature all of these.
Fusion Signage allows you to display content including:
- Images
- Videos
- Websites
- PowerPoint
- Canva
- Google Sheets
- Weather
- News Updates
- Custom Apps
For slick displays, content must be created to the resolution and aspect ratio of your screen/s. See supported media for more information.Â
